The ADHD & Neurodivergent Brain Manual

What it actually is, what it isn’t and what gets confused

Ever wished someone had just explained your brain properly?

Not the stereotypes.

Not the “try harder.”

Not the “everyone struggles sometimes.”

Just the actual science, in plain English.Including how assessment works, what medication actually does, and why so many things get confused along the way.

This DISTRACTD Foundations Night is all about finally understanding what ADHD and neurodivergence really are, and gently untangling the myths, labels and mix-ups that so many of us have carried for years.

Because ADHD isn’t laziness.

It isn’t a motivation problem.

And it definitely isn’t a personality flaw.

It’s a difference in how the brain regulates attention, energy, emotion and executive function.

And once you understand that, so much starts to make sense.

We’re joined by a GP, psychiatrist and psychologist to walk through:

What ADHD actually is and what it isn’t

How neurodivergent brains process the world differently

How ADHD can overlap with anxiety

How ADHD differs from autism

The quieter, internalised presentations many people miss

What assessments measure and what they absolutely don’t

Think less lecture.

More lightbulb moments.

The kind where you quietly go,

“…ohhh. That explains my whole life.”

Whether you’re newly diagnosed, questioning, supporting someone, or just curious, this night gives you the foundations and language to understand your brain with clarity and compassion.

A Note from Amanda

Hello friends,

I’ve really missed you all. There’s something about walking into a DISTRACTD night and seeing familiar faces that fills my cup straight away. Thank you for coming, and welcome to anyone new tonight. DISTRACTD exists because this community shows up for each other.

I hope you brought a partner, parent or friend with you. Understanding ADHD works best when the people around us learn alongside us.

This month we’re focusing on understanding ADHD foundations properly, what it actually is, what it isn’t, and why so many people get confused along the way. Because clarity removes so much shame.

We’re also starting our Body Doubling sessions next week, and I’m really excited to sit alongside you all and kick some goals together. Six gentle weeks of getting things done, booking the appointments you’ve been putting off, replying to the emails, working through the list… one small step at a time.

Behind the scenes it’s been a busy start to the year. We’re preparing to roll out our new DISTRACTD training programs soon, we’ve applied for some grants to help keep these nights free for families, and we’ve got some new merch at tonight’s event if you’d like a look.

Personally, I feel more on track this year than last. Still up too late sometimes and not moving enough, but eating better and drinking less… Amanda in her twenties would not recognise me.

DISTRACTD is community-funded. If these nights have helped you or someone you love, there’s always a donation link or merch table to help us keep going. And please share these events with your networks so we can support more families.

Thank you for being here.

Come curious.

Leave clearer.

Big love,

Amanda

Neuroinclusion Training for Workplaces

Practical. Strengths-based. Built for real teams.

DISTRACTD has developed a workplace training program to help organisations better understand, support, and retain neurodivergent talent.

Think of it like a first aid refresher, but for neuroinclusion.

Our facilitators come to you, in person or online, guiding your team through practical strategies like neuroinclusive onboarding, inclusive hiring practices, simple workplace accommodations, and policies that help different brains thrive.

Neurodivergent people are often innovators, problem-solvers, and big-picture thinkers. With the right support, those differences become strengths that lift whole teams.

Developed in collaboration with GPs, psychologists, and psychiatrists, this program is strengths-based, realistic, and grounded in lived experience.

Bookings open early 2026.

Help your team work better together.

Why Knowing Doesn’t Equal Doing

Daily Functioning, Executive Function & the Regulation Puzzle

Ever understood exactly what you needed to do…

and still couldn’t do it?

Not because you didn’t care.

Not because you weren’t trying.

Not because you were lazy.

Just because executive function works differently under stress.

This DISTRACTD Foundations Night is about daily functioning.

Why insight doesn’t always lead to action.

Why overwhelm, avoidance and stalling show up even when you know better.

And why ADHD is not a motivation problem, but a regulation one.

Because ADHD isn’t a lack of effort.

It isn’t a willpower issue.

And it definitely isn’t a character flaw.

It’s a difference in how the brain manages planning, emotion, memory, energy and task-starting… especially when stress enters the picture.

And once you understand that, so many frustrating patterns start to make sense.

We’ll explore:

How executive function changes under stress

Why knowing doesn’t equal doing

The difference between motivation and capacity

Why avoidance and overwhelm are signals, not failures

How unmet needs affect daily functioning

Why external structure supports the brain

How environment design can reduce friction

Real-life organising strategies that work with ADHD brains

Think less productivity advice.

More compassionate clarity.

The kind where you quietly go,

“…so that’s why I get stuck.”

Whether you’re diagnosed, questioning, supporting someone, or trying to make sense of your own patterns, this night gives you language and tools to understand daily functioning with kindness and realism.

Come curious.

Leave clearer.
